Keep at it knalb!

I finally 100%ed it tonight with extensive help of a guide. All 231/12/3 collectibles.

Game is an absolute masterpiece of creativity and logic, though honestly quite frustrating to play as a game - made me feel dumb! So many "OMG that's genius!" moments. Also far more content than I expected, it's a shame much of it is hidden behind secrets within secrets within secrets. I really enjoyed the gallery showcasing his early drafts/ and concepts for the game, as well as his commentary - the author is truly a genius.

As a work of art this is easily a 10/10, however as a game I can only give it a 7/10 based on my personal love-hate relationship with it.

I think I'd agree with that from what I've played. I'm surprised you and many others managed to persist through the whole game without giving up and retiring it!

It's a very clever brain twister of a game, but one where I would get extremely stuck and frustrated too many times for it to be enjoyable to play. But I'm also not a puzzle game fan by any stretch.

I was seriously considering retiring it a couple hours in when the difficulty ramped up dramatically. Eventually I decided to swallow my pride and consult a guide as I really did want to experience all the levels.

This is the first time I hear about this game, but judging by how the forumites here describe it - seems quite excellent indeed!
I just hope it won't make me feel too stupid too fast (puzzle games are not really my forte, though I enjoyed my time with The Witness and Limbo)

Baba Is You is a perfect example of a game that I would not have otherwise tried, let alone persevered through but for the fact that it was voted 'Game of the Month'.
The fact that I got to experience this with others and discuss it afterwards is a bonus.

Figured I'd drop by and leave a few thoughts on the game. I've been slowly working my way through it, it has been the perfect game for the situation, been enjoying my time with it so far but I definitely feel the frustration, some of these puzzles I've sat staring at for ages before working them out. I'm endeavouring not to use guides or hints, and I've been doing pretty well with that I feel, I've cleared through to World 6 so far having to check solutions on 2 occasions which is more of a recommendation to not play this game when you're too tired if nothing else.

Both of those were in World 5; Extra 2: Skull House and E: Insulation. Skull House's simplicity completely threw me, I genuinely didn't understand how it was supposed to work. I knew exactly what I needed to do but I made the assumption that the actual solution wouldn't work so I never tried it. Though with such limited possibilities I'm surprised I never just accidentally tripped into the solution lol. Insulation though, again it turned out to be really simple but I spent forever with this one thinking of all the wrong solutions, getting annoyingly close at times but just never figuring it out. Another bad assumption about the interactions would have stopped me from getting this one.

I am a little bit worried it's going to get more and more obtuse as I go forward, the best puzzles in this game are the ones that keep it limited, very easy to make something seem hard just by overloading the player with bigger and "chaotic" boards. That said, I have a hard time believing that even if it does this that it won't stay satisfying.

So I think I've done most of the ??? Puzzles now getting level is text was a pain in the arse now moved onto abc area. On abc-2 Ba need to figure out how to make enough Baba for all the rules

— 07/19/2023 10:05 PM
finished the abc area think that was the smallest area

— 07/20/2023 10:01 PM
So made it to depths Extra -4: Buried treasure: This is the same as the previous extra but looks like I don't have the same luxury of setting up the rules and overwritten I did previously

— 07/21/2023 11:12 PM
So finished the depths and now moved onto meta. Done the first 6 levels now of meta

— 07/22/2023 11:15 PM
And with that I'm finally done. All levels completed with all 3 orbs and 226 flowers gotten with liberal use of hints and solutions. Not sure i'd of beat the game without them and tbh playing this game in GotM doesn't really suit this game as it's more of a slow burn a marathon not a sprint to finish this game without hints . I'll try write a full review tomorrow but man some of those secret levels were obnoxious Especially Meta when you have to keep redoing the same level over and over again to change the level into some different just to access more levels. Or where you have to convert one level into a flag to beat a different level

Baba is You
Completion July 22, 2023
Main+Extras 44h 4m 35s
Notes 226 levels completed
Review
+Unique and interesting puzzles
+Slowly introduces new rules well through the 226 levels
+Rewards outside the box thinking
=Game is more of a slow burn then a sprint and should be considered to played that way
-Does a poor job explaining it’s mechanics
-Alot of puzzles can end up being obnoxiously obscure
-Puzzles can have too many steps and reliant on positing then I hoped
Overview:
Baba is you is an extremely well built puzzle game about rules and breaking them. It rewards outside the box thinking which makes for satisfying solution building. This is helped by slowly including new rules into the game. This however is not helped by the difficulty of some of the levels. Some levels especially end game can be obscure in what it wants to do and while It is easy to understand rules it does a poor job explaining mechanics and ultimately makes a lot of the levels too hard to be fun with you thinking that was the solution? I will admit though I played this in a quick burst but this game is better suited as a slow burn and a game you leave in the background to think of solutions. Still I feel some of the solutions for puzzles are obnoxious obscure and that hurts the fun you can have with this gameplay

Baba is not me. I decided to retire it rather than suffer through the maps with a guide. I'm stuck on several levels now and the hints don't do it for me. I could either look up the solution or stop. I decided to go with the latter because the game is just not for me. My brain doesn't work in the way that it requires to solve the puzzles.

My track record for game of the month isn't great this year. I think this is my third retirement in a row for GotM. August will be my month I'm sure.

I definitely agree with the previous sentiments. I'm still enjoying the game but I really can't deny how truly exhausting it's become just playing it on a general basis, which is pretty strange considering how relatively good the game is. Trying to just brute force the game, carve through as many puzzles as possible in each sitting really isn't a great strategy because of how inconsistent the pacing can be, you can blitz through one world in no time without an issue, then suddenly a single puzzle can stump you for hours. Such is the nature of the genre I guess. The sheer number of puzzles is rather overwhelming.

I don't want to retire it though but I will definitely be switching this to a long term project where I just try to chip away at a puzzle or two each day and then just eventually finish it. There's just no way I'm going to finish it by the end of the month, and I really do want to play other things as well.

I finally decided to commit to returning to this game after 2 months. I finished the rest of the regular worlds, (100% a good chunk of them) and "beat" the game. (That final puzzle was quite the ordeal) I can't remember exactly how much there is left but it's at least still quite a bit. Hopefully, the puzzles aren't too brain-numbing and I'll be able to actually beat the game before the end of the month. I felt like the levels in the volcanic cavern and mountaintop were too easy.

I did manage to finish the game this month which means I can give more attention to other games. For my full review go to the wins thread or just look on my profile.

September 26th - Baba is You - 46 h 30 m - (Main+) 7/10 - Beat most of the levels in the map, ??? and depths areas. Got 194 seeds, 11 flowers and 1 orb.

I wasn't super invested in this game so I can't think of anything exclusive to put here. It was a fun game but a bit too difficult for my liking.
