Updated 2.5 Days Ago

This was an amazing game, and I'm very glad to have played it. I expect I'll want to come back and do some of the more advanced stuff/DLC later on, but first I want a break. This is a game rich with challenges that is very rewarding to play, but as such I want to come back to it when I feel more fresh down the line, and take a chance to savor what the main story was. Certainly one of the best games I've ever played, and I enjoyed pretty much every minute. For a small critique, there are a few moments where I did not really feel like I understood where I was intended to go next, and this led to a little bit of aimless wandering around. That being said, this is a metroidvania, so the exploration I did then was certainly also enjoyable and worthwhile.

Hollow Knight is the best Metroidvania i have ever played. The variety of enemies and bosses is staggering, keeping the gameplay fresh and challenging throughout. The art is absolutely amazing, with everything beautifully hand-drawn, giving the world a unique and immersive aesthetic. The DLCs are excellent, adding even more depth and content to an already huge game. The game is challenging but rewarding, with each victory feeling satisfying. The map is huge, with a lot of environmental variety that keeps exploration exciting. The only gripe is that the story is pretty vague, leaving much to interpretation.
Overall, Hollow Knight sets the standard for Metroidvanias, with its stunning art, rich content, and satisfying challenge making it a must-play for fans of the genre.

One of the genres most affected by the 3D boom of the late 90s and 2000s was the exploratory action-adventure platformer, or Metroidvania, if you prefer. What was once a thriving subset of action games was relegated to mostly handheld-only experiences, and it took lower-budget indie developers to bring the genre back into the mainstream. Even though Hollow Knight was released a good few years into the Metroidvania renaissance, its development began when the genre was just gaining its footing again. But by the time it was released, the medium was revitalized, and it couldn't have come at a better time for either Hollow Knight or the genre's fans. Because it's one of the few games of its kind that feels like it can stand up to—and, in many ways, surpass—the many titles from gaming's past that it was inspired by.As a Kickstarter, Hollow Knight was a project that relied a lot on its presentation to draw players in, and draw players in it did. Its art style is excellent; the characters are mostly simple yet charming and full of life. Light and darkness play a huge part in this game, in the game's overall theme just as much as its art. For a game that prides itself on its difficulty, its hand-drawn art is inviting in its beauty. Like the call of the void that prompts the unnamed knight to return to Hallownest, the vivid settings draw in players of all kinds, massively increasing HK's appeal. And the vividness doesn't stop at the surface, either; while a lot of dungeon crawlers can lack a certain visual distinction and lose themselves in monochromatic shades of dark blues and pale grays, Hollow Knight keeps the atmospheres fresh, with visual standouts like Greenpath, Crystal Peak, or the City of Tears.
And while the presentation gets players in the door, the gameplay keeps them there. Movement starts out limited, as does the environment. The first hour or so helps the player gain their bearings and become acclimated to the world. This is also where players are most likely to retire from the game, but that feeling swiftly passes. Each new ability emboldens the player to express themselves more fluidly, and that's helped by a nearly flawless movement and combat system. The freedom of movement is impressive, especially in the air; HK lets the player feel fully in control of the knight, which instills an element of fairness and responsibility in the player. Even the toughest boss battles (pre-DLC) feel possible to overcome if the player is willing to learn. And that's why the combat, constantly dodging while waiting for your moment to attack, feels so satisfying. Victory feels earned, sure, but defeat does too, and it's rare for a game like this to be able to pull off. Each encounter feels like a dance; the opponent attacks, and you respond in kind. And if you lose your step, it'll be punished. And appropriate for a dance, the soundtrack provides an exceptional backdrop—sometimes soothing, sometimes epic, always excellent.
Perhaps the biggest thing that Hollow Knight has going for it, though, is its world. Exploration takes center stage in HK, and it's what makes it such a hard game to walk away from. It prods your curiosity naturally with twisting, branching paths that just beg to be explored. You never know what you're going to walk into, and finding a new area is like feeling your way around a dark room, totally unaware of the dangers that may lurk in the shadows. Caverns almost feel endless at times, such is the amount of content packed into this game. Even with maps and the compass, there are plenty of uncharted rooms to fill out, many of them hiding hidden bosses and treasures. It's the type of game that rewards backtracking, as newfound abilities always open up a plethora of previously unreachable areas. It challenges players and forces them out of their comfort zones, but the payoff is excellent. The lore takes a similar approach; the story of the kingdom of Hallownest is not spelled out but rather revealed in bits and pieces. The game is certainly enjoyable enough without looking too deep into the story—that's just how good it is—but when put all together, it really highlights the great amount of detail that went into creating this game.
Depth, then, is an excellent adjective to describe Hollow Knight. This is clearly a game that was made with a massive amount of love and care, and that emanates from every nook and cranny this game has to offer. And not just this game, either; the whole reason Silksong is a sequel is because the developers just couldn't stop coming up with new ideas. It's clear they love these games, and it's not hard to see why. Just like how HK was inspired by the Metroidvanias of old, it too will inspire developers in the future to dig deeper and break new ground. After all, digging deep is what Hollow Knight is all about. Forgive its somewhat slow start, and you'll experience a thoroughly deep and rewarding game, and one of the very best of the genre.

I put it down 2 bosses before finishing the game because I was burning out on gaming as a whole and knew the next 2 bosses due to YouTube (I don’t know why I do this to myself). Took a few hours to get rolling the second time but once I did, it re-established and solidified itself as the best Metroidvania. Addicting in a way that only Soulslikes typically can be - perhaps due to the challenge? Controls elite, level design & art elite, characters amazing, abilities/badges are fun and useful, secrets are awesome, bosses are diverse and fun to fight. Most importantly, its just an absolutely joyful world to explore. Only negative thing I can think of is the fast travel points are too few and far between... it wastes your time a bit.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

Great game. Very atmospheric, with great music and art. The game play in terms of fights is fluid. Not an easy game, but for main + sides (91% completion), I'd say that the game isn't overly difficult either. Often when entering into a boss fight for the first time, you'll die. And die again. And again after that. But it was incredibly rewarding to see the progression made each time as you get further and further into a boss fight, as you learn the mechanics of each boss until you can tell that you're incredibly close to beating it and only silly mistakes made you fail. No deaths are unfair. It's all about learning how each boss moves and attacks, and thus when to attack, when to dodge, and when to heal. As such, I genuinely feel that anyone could pick up this game and play it through despite general consensus labelling the game "hard".The only thing that stops me rating the game higher, is because I found the lore fairly confusing, and locked behind a lot of things. I prefer more of a story driven game myself and whilst the bosses were fun, I don't feel any particular urge to play more than the 91% I have. And whilst there's no doubt that there's a lot of lore to the game, I found it all over the place and hard to piece together. Some of the lore also requires certain things to be unlocked, found, and/or beaten before more is revealed which means that information can be missed (as not all bosses and mini bosses are required for game completion). By the end of the game despite having 91%, I didn't particularly feel as though I understood the story at all. The ending also confused me.
I'd also discovered that it was possible to lock yourself out of certain things which again I'm not a fan of. I don't particularly like multiple endings either. I can appreciate an open ending where the player is left to interpret the ending however they like, but having endings locked behind certain actions doesn't gel well with me.

This game is really cool and I really like it, I really do. However I'm not sure it's a game for me. The act of exploring is one of my least favorite things in games because I hate the idea of not knowing if I am going somewhere I should or not, or whether the way I'm traveling is going to get me to my desired 'destination'. I loved the combat, I loved all of the mechanics, the boss fights were extremely fun, but I just didn't like the exploring part and it eventually got to me. The game isn't really all that difficult (as far as I made it), I beat all the bosses I faced on my first attempt. I understand that this game is good, that much is very obvious, however it's just certainly not for me.Updated 2.5 Months Ago

112% Completed. Definitely one of the greatest indie game of all time. I really love the experience, the gameplay is awesome, the ost and the art is incredible. Overall The platinum is not that hard, except for the godmaster DLC, that's is extremely hard to finish.
In my option the last pantheon on DLC has too much bosses, the 25 firsts is too easy and every run the first 15 minutes I fell like "waste time"
About the platinum trophy:
Is not THAT Hard except for the 5º Pantheon, this trophy is really reallly hard to get, I spend something like 24 hours just to be able to get that one.

There's not much left to say about Hollow Knight in '24. Its legacy is everywhere, not always for the best.It is, by far, one of the absolute best games of the past decade. The art, the setting, the general gameplay, the whole design and structure... everything here is close to perfection. That was my second playthrough, this time aiming the 100% + DLCs. I took my time, playing alongside a friend who was totally discovering the game : fantastic experience, even more satisfying than the first time (although some of the DLCs tend to be tough just for the pleasure of being tough - I hope the soon-to-be series won't follow this path since the base game was IMO perfectly balanced).
I'm actually not surprised how long Silksong takes to show up. Hollow Knight seems almost impossible to overtake in its style - a lot of a games tried in the last few years, but as much as I loved some recent 'metroidvania' like the Blasphemous games, none of them really compete, for that very simple reason that Hollow Knight is the Reference backtracking games needed for so long to become a genre of their own. You can't surpass a reference and you can't overtake a classic. You just try to live in its shadow - even if you're the very person that created it in the first place. You can make numerous very good games in a row, but you can't produce a true turning point in a video game history every other year. That's what Hollow Knight is and what it will be remembered for.
