Best 2D Metroid to date.Good
- can be a linear experience if you want, or it can backtrack for power ups if you want as well.
- no more bs hidden passages like in the old games where you need to bomb every nook and cranny. They finally got the scan right
- visuals look great
- manual aiming is a great addition
- new power ups are a great addition. And new environment interactions.
- parry system is amazing. Rewards players who have good reflexes. Parrying an attack feels satisfying.
- crouching slide is really fun to use. Having samus automatically turn into morph ball when climbing into vents is really convenient.
- Turning into morph ball with one button is convenient as well.
- Space jump is finally not too annoying to use.
- a good variety of enemies, and most have unique attacks.
Bad
- I wish there were more cutscenes where Samus would react more, or show more emotion, or possibly say something. Or even take off her helmet for a bit, just some kind of interaction aside from fighting or listening to someone.

I don't know how to feel about this game. The game is good but there are some points which pissed me to the point of nearly dropping the game.
Once you get gravity suit and space jump the game got really fun but before that some parts were awful.
The robots that you can't kill before doing the mini boss is a cool idea for the first 2 and then it just gets fucking annoying.
Don't really like the fact that the game doesn't tell you where to go but hints and in some parts the hints are awful as well.
Overall enjoyed the game and the bosses were fun but thats about it.

Hope you like dying! I did.Good:
> Epic boss battles. Fist-pumping wins.
> Impressive variety of enemies
> Tons of hidden items, stuff for completionists, sequence breaks for speedrunners... it's all here!
> Happily abandoned the crap basket that was Other M in favor of classic 2D
Meh:
> All those hidden items? You don't need them
> Incredibly linear. Barely a Metroidvania.
> I don't like the parry mechanic at all... and it doesn't fit in this series, which is all about isolation, exploration, and keeping things at a distance.
> EMMI is an interesting gimmick -- I loved it at first, but later iterations were simply obnoxious. Never felt dread, just irritation.
> Unlike other Metroid games, the environments here are too similar, too unimaginative, and less like an "alien dream"
> I didn't like using Shinespark and never got proficient with it. Luckily you don't *have* to unless you're a completionist.
> My wrist is sore
> Could've used more scary elements
> Could've used a swimsuit
Bad:
> They reuse a little classic Metroid music, but the majority is original music, and it's disappointing
> Story is too melodramatic for me. Didn't care about the characters and their lame motivations.
> The presentation isn't as unique as the finer Metroidvanias
> Should really be more than 1 ending

Since I love the Metroidvania genre, you'd think I'd love a game the genre is named after! Well, that is pretty much correct whoever you are! First off, there are some things that annoyed me. Ledge grabbing is super inconsistent and made for some very infuriating platforming before you have some of the later upgrades. The EMMI encounters, while cool and effective, can get frustrating in later game. But there are still some very awesome set pieces involving them, especially when you get to the point where you can destroy the EMMI, it was always fun and satisfying to figure out the best place to get a good shot at those little robot freakbates! And the last gripe I have is even tho there are a ton of different biomes on the map with warp points to make it seem like you'll be freely fartin' around the map, there isn't too much freedom to explore to progress the story. It really feels pretty linear because there's always a clear path for you to go after getting an upgrade. In Metroidvanias, the map is usually a puzzle in itself to figure out, but there really isn't much to figure out here. It's always pretty clear where you're supposed to go next.
Now for the good stuff. Controls, while a little convoluted, are incredible. The button mapping for this game utilizes every single button on the Switch while somehow feeling super natural (like a little ghost fucker!). The graphics are amazing and it runs fantastic in handheld. And the bosses are freaking great. Challenging, but if you persevere and learn their moves, you'll be golden like a shower!
Overall, a very fun game that lives up to being the grandfather of a genre. I'd let a little metroid suck my butt any day of the week!

Personally this is a 9/10. I love metroid and this is the best metroid, it's pretty simple. My gripes were pretty minor: a lack of memorable music, bosses being tedious at some points, and getting lost is pretty easy. For full pirce this game is also a bit short. Overall, I loved it, even though i only mentioned my gripes lolNov. 24th Edit: bumped up rating to 9/10
Mar. 10th Edit: beat it again. Better time, few more items. Yup, this is my favourite Metroid. Rating up to 10!

Short and sweet. The whole setting is a great mix of not so serious but still dreading with the abandoned planet vibe. Samus feels AMAZING to control in which is probably one of the smoothest character controllers in videogames. Gameplay feels smooth and punchy, with a lot of room for player skill expression. Only downside was it could be a bit longer in the sense that when you get an upgrade the game feels like it barely explores with the new mechanics and puts you straight into a new upgrade or boss.
Challenging with a good learning curve but not unfair.
Defintely feels like you do need to experience an higher difficulty to get the most of it.

Trying to discuss what I love about Metroid Dread is like going into your favorite store and being told you can have anything you want. It's all absolutely fantastic. Let's start with what is most likely my favorite thing, the movement. Ever heard of smooth controls before? Maybe even butter smooth? Yeah well the debate is over, take home your Mario games, your DK's, even more noncontemporary games such as Spider-Man... Metroid Dread absolutely crushes almost any other game you can throw at it with simply how good it feels to move. Shooting and countering are both more fleshed out and yet still easier to use than ever before, and on top of that all extra abilities that you receive help not only to make you stronger, but most are also about helping make for more fluid and fast paced gameplay. No wonder so many people love speedrunning the Metroid series, it feels so damn good to go fast and absolutely slash anything in front of you to pieces.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

Really fun gameplay, very pretty looking, love the cinematic flare to big bosses. Collecting the powers as you go on is very satisfying and so is beating a tough boss. The story though minimal was actually pretty interesting. Negatives: music isn't memorable at all, mini bosses repeated 10+ times, zones have no real identity to them. The designs overlap so much, it just ends up becoming forgettable. EMMI fights were cool to begin with but they got increasingly annoying. The combat being so focused around parrying is lame. It's super linear and handholdy for this genre. I would go as far to say that it's an action game pretending to be a metroidvania. Overall good game, hope we get more 2D Metroid in the future.Updated 4 Months Ago

Dread tries to bring a new generation of Metroid to the switch, but if falls flat on its poorly implemented mechanics, repetitive bosses, frustrating encounters and absolutely terrible gimmick in the form of the E.M.M.I.s. The game tries to invoke the feeling of Samus being hunted down by this new enemy type, but they quickly become annoying to the degree of being the lowest point of the game. They are fast, confined to tight environments and can install kill you, so their encounters feel like trial and error until it happens to not be on your way.
The game feels significantly more linear compared to its predecessor (Samus Returns) and backtracking is too much of a hassle up until the end of the game, where unrestricted teleporting is unlocked.
Boss design is one of the worst in the series. You will fight the exact same boss 6 or 7 times with a few different ones scattered here and there for pacing.
Meteoid Dread is not terrible, I still enjoyed some of my time with it, but it is absolutely a low point in the series. It is short though, so if you are still up for it, give Dread a try.

Sometimes exhilarating, sometimes irritating, Dread is penalized by somewhat unintuitive controls and a weird level-design which, by trying too hard to prevent us from getting too lost... spends half the time slowing down the progression. Probably one of the most overrated games in the last pair of years BUT this doesn't prevent some very good ideas and really cool moments.Updated 5 Months Ago

Metroid Dread ReviewLet me start by saying - wow, what an incredible game Metroid Dread is! As a long-time fan of the series, this entry truly blew me away.
The story picks up sometime after the events of Metroid Fusion, with the X Parasite threat re-emerging. While I won't spoil any of the narrative beats, the ending in particular left me utterly mind-blown and keen to see where the saga goes next.
In terms of gameplay, it builds incredibly well upon the foundation laid by Metroid: Samus Returns. The new abilities Samus acquires feel like perfect additions that integrate seamlessly into the classic "Metroidvania" format fans know and love.
But where Dread really shines is in its masterful audio design. The atmospheric musical score is arguably among the best the franchise has ever delivered, keeping me immersed in the eerie, alien environments.
Overall, Metroid Dread serves as a marvelous closing chapter for the storyline arc kicked off by the original games decades ago. It's a true return to form that warrants a perfect 10/10 score from me - my personal game of the year, and I hope it gets that recognition.
For now, the game remains exclusive to the Nintendo Switch with no other versions announced. But fans of the series owe it to themselves to experience this superb addition to the beloved franchise.
Just a few bits of life advice to tack on: brush your teeth regularly, go easy on the coffee, and most importantly - take care of yourselves, folks! I'm thrilled Metroid is back in its best form yet.

Gameplay 3/3 brutally difficult when learning from the beginning. Once used to it hard mode wasn't nearly as hard as one might have thought. You can only take damage a small few times, definitely satisfying to get good at. The variety of combat situations was great throughout a full playthroufh and exploration was very fun as well. Story 3/3 uniquely more story present than I was expecting. And it's very solid. Really enjoyable to see how as the story progresses the world is affected too.
Visuals 2/2 perfect for its style and really enjoyable variety of locations and enemy designs
Audio 2/2 fantastic music and satisfying weapon sounds, the dailogue is great too.
Highly recommend 100% completion for the gameplay.

I loved this game. It was very challenging in parts, especially towards the end, but I found the challenge extremely rewarding. The platforming was well polished, the controls were precise, it's just a very well made game. The cat and mouse gameplay of the E.M.M.I's was always stress inducing, but I enjoyed it. The typical backtracking you come to expect from Metroid games wasn't annoying, it felt pretty natural, and the length of the game doesn't overstay its welcome. I consider this game to be a must have for any Switch game library, just don't expect it to be a walk in the park.Updated 6.5 Months Ago

My first full metroid experience and one I fully recommend to others. The gameplay and movement is some of the smoothest, and the level of overall polish is something you can only expect from a Nintendo game.
My main issue with metroidvanias normally is getting lost for hours at a time, but this game expertly funnels you in the correct direction every time, removing all frustrations I usually feel.
Fun bosses and gameplay. Story is a little insane, but whatever.

Tight, snappy and slick gameplay with a satisfying and rewarding learning curve. The levels are vast and a joy to explore. Upgrades that expand your arsenal and open up the world are never far away, making it addictive to keep pushing on.
The bosses are epic, a test of timing, learning sequences and utilising your abilities. Challenging but never unfair or drawn out.
It takes a little time to familiarise yourself with navigating the world but Metroid’s signature backtracking soon becomes instinctive.
I’m not a huge fan of the E.M.M.I sections. A great concept but I think it was a mistake making the counter attack so tricky to pull off. Missing the split-second timing window means waiting at a checkpoint loading screen. It can sap too much of the game’s momentum.
Overall, although I’m not a long time Metroid fan, this was a great experience and deserves a place in everybody’s Switch collection.

As a Metroidvania, Metroid Dread flowed well. The level design was great! After getting a lot of the items/suit upgrades, the controls became somewhat cumbersome and the double jump didn't work as well as I expected it to. This hindered the experience when you needed to dodge boss attacks with the double jump specifically. Granted I am not well-versed in sidescrolling shooters and Metroid games specifically so this may vary from player to player.Updated 7 Months Ago
