This tale is very close to russians who enjoy a good art. A lot of things expressed here can be lost in translation. Having said that, I enjoyed the hell out of it.Updated 3 Days Ago

Gameplay is not the greatest, some parts are made harder with the laggy controls. The worst though is the camera and the motions. I was not expecting to get motion sick from a "flat game" in 2024.The characters are great, the story is good though.

Indika is a game that I loved. The story weaves together some commonsense religious "philosophy", life in Russia at the turn of the XX century, good story with several twists, top notch voice acting (Indika is played superbly), and great environmental puzzles. Even more, the game is done in about 4 hours, so you can finish it in an afternoon. The artistic style is very suitable for the themes of the game, and the graphics is, frankly, great for an indie game. What's even better is that the game is explicitly surrealistic: the tech shown in "Indika" is not physically impossible but fantastical for the setting; characters are talking in a very modern way, and I mean not just the language but also the reasoning style and some minor well-placed anachronisms that are just enough to make you wonder. And man, I loved the retro levels! (you'll know what I mean when you play)
Overall, great game, highly recommended! There is a caveat, though - I'm talking about the Russian version of the game. I didn't try the English version but I'm pretty sure the voice acting wouldn't be as great there. But most importantly, the plot and the main themes of the game would probably not be familiar to foreigners, at least not familiar enough to enjoy the game as fully as you're supposed to. If your brain doesn't immediately give you a wide range of associations when it hears "Russian orthodox monastery", you may be disappointed.

Evil is omnipresent and God is silent.Indika starts off extremely intriguing, the setup at the monastery of a seemingly very kind nun who is hated by her peers and haunted by an evil voice in her head is great. An interesting mind break mechanic is introduced while the world twists and breaks around her as she nearly succumbs to the voices in her head, this break allows her new paths to traverse the world and solve puzzles.
The baffling thing is this happens only twice in the entire game!? The evil voice, which is by far the most interesting aspect of the game, is practically gone and non existent in the back half of the game.
So what you have is a 4 hour walking simulator with bare-boned base level puzzles (calling them puzzles may be too generous). The concept is good but it feels unfinished.

pros+ beautiful, strange, and oppressive environments
+ phenomenal voice acting
+ a story that tackles big, uncomfortable themes about good vs evil and free-will in both humorous and very serious tones
+ great soundtrack
+ when i think about what it means for a game to be "cinematic", Indika is exactly what comes to mind. it's adventurous with its camera, perspectives, framing, lighting. it tells a story with its cinematography as a good movie would, and manages to still feel justified as a video game.
cons
- disappointingly short. i wanted it to keep going! i was so invested in her journey and then the game is just over suddenly
- pretty glitchy, mostly visual glitches thankfully
- not all the puzzles are created equal

What a weird and yet very very awesome game…Incredible original setting and characters.
Storytelling is fascinating and make you intrigued all the time, wanting to know what’s is going to happen all the time.
Visuals while sometimes is a bit sterile, sometimes is beautiful and it has some fantastic aspects like the physics on the clothes of the main character.
Gameplay is simp,e but it fit perfectly with the type of game and even has some interesting and surprising tidbits…
Music and sound didn’t marked me to much but it’s acceptable
Overall is a weird but a very very enjoyable experience and it never overstayed his welcome.

A surreal and dreamy like adventure game about religion, self doubt and darker stuff. it's one of those games that after I finished it, it just stayed in my mind and got me thinking. not a lot of games these days make you do that. the ending and how the games went was unexpected to say the least and I would suggest it to anyone that enjoys indie adventure games.Updated 3 Months Ago

Indika was a unique and refreshing experience ! I loved how they mixed some seemingly incompatible ideas into a game that somehow manages to be coherent. And it's short enough that we don't have time to get too used to it so the entirety of the game is equally surprising and enjoyable.Updated 3 Months Ago

What a weird game. I enjoyed some of it's quirks but sometimes it's not coherent at all.First of all, from a technical standpoint it's unpolished. While some vistas look great, there's constant clipping of textures, unrefined animations (like blood just being framed onto your hands) and Ilya's whole model and lip syncing being off.
Then story wise it's kind of weird as well. You are tasked in delivering a letter, but this sort of loses any purpose midway through and then you are trying to get your companion to a church. There's a lot of sequences that are probably just inside Indika's head., or at least her worldview is heavily skewed by something (either the Devil inside her or just her psychological issues).
The music and short pixel style game sequences took you out of immersion, and I'm not sure I was in favor of it.
The ending did not make any sense to me, I guess she accepted the evil inside her to cope with her wrong doings.

This game will definitely not be for everybody. 1st let me try to explain the type of game.. it's a 3P, Narrative-Driven, almost walking-sim with some basic puzzles and platforming sections mixed in. I saw 1 review describe it as RE 1 without combat and I wonder if they have actually ever played RE or this game. This feels like A Plague Tale walking-sim, but you are a nun questioning her beliefs with the help of an inner demon. It definitely has the eastern European feel that I don't think I have felt replicated by developers anywhere else in the world. Things are pretty bleak. The game can be philosophical at times and almost feels like a short story one might read. It's definitely a unique game that I would recommend to anybody who enjoys narrative-driven games, with the caveat that this game deals with some heavy themes and isn't for kids. There isn't much of a fun factor here. I watched The Seventh Seal after because it put me in a similar mood.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

I fear there was an artistic meaning to this game that was lost on me. It did have some thought-provoking conversations over the idea of faith and such, and the story itself was told in a very interesting way, however, I didn't enjoy it much. I think my biggest issue may have been going in expecting more humor, although the game did offer some humorous spots, it had a more serious undertone the entire time. It was short and looks great, I just don't feel like the game was for me.You can view my entire review here: https://youtu.be/bXYw_bLA7iY

Surrealism where everything seems normal at a glance but is twisted at closer inspection. It does get more outright outlandish later on. Art direction is nice with its monochrome style. Story does have meta narrative about the gamification of certain elements. It does feed into its themes of how religion can turn faith into something cheap like gamification. Puzzles are whatever but serve their purpose (a ton of box pushing!). You could also interpret the meta element as commentary on game design where contrivance and derivative puzzles are frequent. But does that really land, creating your game to be uninteresting to make a point? There are some moments of comedy, usually in the absurd but also the voice in Indika's head. It even does the one liners after dying like it's Jak & Daxter. The end does come in a lowkey way. Perhaps with a realization from Indika about the push/pull of goodness and the devil.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

This is a weird one. Pros:
- Looks amazing. I love the environments, the sound effects, and the pixel sections look great. The textures on the ground, posters and signs, and people's faces sometimes looks like it's meant to be a tech demo
- Following on from this the cinematography in the cutscenes is visually interesting and I always looked forward to the next one
- I quite enjoyed the story and the ending, even if it was predictable
- Each pixel section having its own mini-game was awesome
- Voice acting is top-tier
- While it is mostly a walking simulator, you move at a great pace and have a more than acceptable run button. Thank Christ. So sick of games like God of War or FF7 that just make you shuffle everywhere cause they need to load environments
-The game also tries very hard to not "just" be a walking simulator. There are plenty of sections that try to keep the player engaged, sometimes with varying levels of success
Cons:
-Considering the amount of gameplay, the price is quite steep. Most of your playtime will be spent stuck on puzzles, if you know what to do and skip the cutscenes I wouldn't be surprised if it's less than 2 hours long
-The game has a very weird charm and vibe at the start, that it drops pretty quickly and doesn't really come up again. It front-loads the game with a dancing mouth person, fellow nuns that treat you strangely and poorly, out of place 8-bit music and dialogue, a great looking opening credits sequence and then the game just...drops it all. I wanted more of that, I wanted it to lean more heavily into the craziness but as it is it feels like it just does that as a hook to get people to buy it, and then bails.
- There are very few characters to interact with, and most of the game you're just stuck with one character who isn't all that interesting and has non-sensical conclusion
-While I really enjoyed the pixel sections and are a unique way to tell Indika's backstory they're not really narratively relevant. They don't have much to do with what's happening, how Indika acts, or her reasoning for doing what she does during the game. It kind of just feels like a reason for why she's a nun, and while it has a shocking conclusion, it's not that interesting overall
- The puzzles suck, I think I enjoyed maybe one of them. Considering how weird the environments can be at times, and the puzzles occassionally follow suit, that it doesn't do more is strange. You have this weird fish level with these massive cans and the last level the architecture seems like it's 300% bigger than it should be but...it doesn't really mean anything? Nothing else really fits into that.
- The devil character, that the game description implies is a really big deal, didn't have much to do for about 70% of the story. There at the start, tiny portions in the middle, and then for a bit at the end. Bit disappointed there wasn't more to do with him
While I enjoyed my time with the game, and I leave it mostly satisfied (which is impressive considering I usually hate walking simulator games) it's just...hard to recommend. I'm not sure who this is for exactly. It has no replayability, some of the levels absolutely drag, the "gamification" of religious items and how Indika refuses to pick up certain items like toys considering them "pointless" is interesting but the game doesn't really do much with it. The game tries to do something interesting with the points during the ending, but I found it to be a simple message, and one that has been repeated over and over before, and overall didn't have much of an impact outside of me going "Oh, yeah okay. Damn".
The game starts out so weird and then refuses to keep that vibe which I think would have helped it immensely. The world seems so interesting, there's so much WEIRDNESS but it's all style and no substance. While I enjoyed Indika and found her charming, I think more time spent at the monastery and working with the other nuns would have benefited her character, and allowed us to empathise a bit further with her plight. I also think having her interact with some more people could have expanded her personality a bit more. While what it does have to offer is quite good, and it's apparent the developers had a vision and the creativity to back it up, I think it's disjointed gameplay, world, and narrative hold it back from being a truly special experience.

Updated 4 Months Ago

'I don't know. I don't know what "bad" means. Nor what "dishonest" or "unfair" means. I don't even know what am I... what am I truly, let alone know other things.' It was heard. To that, I said, as Indika said: It's natural. You know in your heart and feel what's honest and what isn't.
'Only we can sin. Only we can talk to Him, and only He can choose who to talk to among us. Only we enter his Kingdom. And only we have seen the imaginary pictures of those burning, slowly, over, and over. But we never saw the imaginary images of those blessed to attain a ticket to the Heavens eternal, cured, blessed, and forgiven. Why?' it was asked.
'When everything is subjective, almost nothing is anymore. Good doesn't matter because without Bad we can't measure it, see it, or even acknowledge its existence. Is it fair that a tree has 1000 leaves and another has 1000... and 1? Is it fair that we suffer? Why couldn't He have made us perfect from the get-go? In His vast starry sky, we matter not.' it was told.
To that, I say: We are what matters most, for we have the capacity to not only see and reason about the starry sky in ways no other beings can, but we also go beyond to ask about our relation to it.
Seeing the snow on the ground is one thing, but asking where it comes from and why it comes even in the first place is what we, humans, do.
And that is but one drop, in an ocean of proof, of why we matter most.
'Evil and Good are the same, for they can't exist without one another. Cold and heat, dark and light. Everything has its opposite, thus rendering everything as we know it what it cannot be without its opposite pole.'
To that, I say: Such grasping of things is one tied to the context of life as we know it, and our knowledge of it is limited, short-sighted, and crippled, for if it wasn't, we wouldn't be needing to ask those questions in the first place.
Heal... live. We try to justify everything as long as we feel content with what we did. As long as we are the 'good' guys. Ironically enough, we try to veil good and evil as subjective things half the time, furthermore coping and trying to muddle it all till nothing is clear anymore. At which point no judgment is valid, no punishment is warranted and no sin should be repented. Funny enough, then no 'good' deed is rewarded either. It's really something how this everything is relative outlook is a snake that bits its tail.
'Is true and sincere kindness real? Does a dog have a soul? Is there such a thing as a choice? and when I do choose something, am I not predisposed to do it? What does it all mean?' it was pondered.
To that, I say: We are the masters of it all, He wouldn't have wanted it for us to be any other way.
An incredible mini-showcase of Russian literature. It's strong, it's sad and bleak.
I'm naive because after I finished it I said to myself I wish I had power over this story to make it end differently, start differently. but then what's the point?
It's so strong and moving because we feel so hopeless to do anything about it. So helpless that in fact, we cannot even control our emotions and thoughts when perceiving those events. That weakness, is our greatest strength, for it is what sets us apart, and makes us grow and strive.
