Good

- Graphics are amazing.

- Large variety of weapons, each one is unique, and has its own special use in certain situations and against certain enemies.

- The survival horror theme is implemented in a very effective way.

- Story is interesting, and draws you in as you learn more about the alien life.

- Very interesting perks that you can obtain, which are stasis and kinesis. Stasis allows you to slow down motion to a crawl and kinesis lets you throw/move objects. They are implemented in a way that does not make the game broken.

- The game makes you take out the limbs of the enemies, which makes the whole shooting experience more challenging and tactical.

- Music is amazing. Combining loud and quiet orchestral instruments during the right situations puts you at the edge of your seat throughout the game.

- There are parts of the game where you navigate the area in zero gravity, its pretty neat.

Bad

- nothing

The gameplay is a lot of fun and this game does a great job at creating a tense atmosphere. The zero gravity parts kind of sucked though, I felt like the game wouldn't let me jump from places I should've been able to. Also the final boss was piss easy and a massive disappointment.

Gameplay-wise, the game is a typical survival horror. However, if you don't impose any restrictions on yourself, the game is extremely easy, as there are a million resources, so the "survival" aspect feels weak. I can't judge the horror part; it's all individual, although aside from a couple of jump scares, I didn't find anything scary for myself. Technically, the game is made brilliantly. Aesthetically, for its year, it's a masterpiece. The plot is clichéd and predictable but quite tolerable and doesn't raise any questions, and that's all you need. In conclusion: a high-quality, beautiful shooter (yes, shooter, not horror) with an okay story, like a good old Hollywood action blockbuster. 8/10

Amazing sci-fi horror game with plenty to keep you engaged. You play engineer Isaac Clarke as he works his way through various sections of the mining spaceship Ishimura on what starts out as a repair mission, but turns into a mission for survival as he battles deadly Necromorphs that have invaded the ship.

The immersion is high given that most HUD elements are removed, so there are no distractions from the eerie atmosphere of the environments, including fantastic sound design. There are plenty of jump scares, so be prepared! There are some frustrating sections that may require multiple attempts to get through, but persevere and learn the tactics and timing that will obliterate your enemies and you will be rewarded.

In 2006, when pitching the game that would go on to become Dead Space, its creator Glen Schofield said that he wanted to make the scariest game he could possibly think of; one that would go on to be considered one of the scariest of all time. Even almost 20 years ago, this was a tall task. The survival-horror genre had just received one of its landmark titles, Resident Evil 4 (itself a big inspiration for Dead Space), and the younger Silent Hill series captures the minds of many with its unique blend of psychological horror and suspense. Suffice it to say, 2008's Dead Space had a lot to live up to. For many, it delivered. It was the first of a trilogy, went on to sell over a million copies, and garnered significant critical acclaim. Is it one of the scariest games of all time? Well, no. But it's still quite good.

Sci-fi horror was actually quite a unique approach to the genre at the time; before Dead Space, the closest to it was something like DOOM or System Shock, which were both far more focused on action than anything else. Dead Space, then, represented a departure towards a more suspenseful, more visceral experience. This is established immediately, and is an omnipresent factor towards realizing the game's philosophy. Audio and visual design was of paramount importance to the developers here, and if there's one thing to take away from Dead Space, it's its atmosphere. From the dark, cramped hallways where you're constantly stepping over the fallen crewmates of the ill-fated USG Ishimura, to the zero-gravity sections where you get glimpses of the vastness of space and the planet below, Dead Space never fails to impress. And for an early era PS3 title, this game delivers visuals worthy of its cosmic setting, even if there are some slowdowns during more action-packed moments.

The action itself, though, is definitely one of the game's brighter spots. Dead Space is a relatively simple game with a tight design, which really contributes to a focused gameplay experience without too much variety, but with an extremely solid base. The combat mechanics are good, and the limb-focused element of defeating enemies is equal parts unique and satisfying. The mechanics are intentionally limited, which fits with the narrative and the atmosphere that the game is aiming to create, while also giving players a few neat tools at their disposal, but crucially, without them becoming overwhelming. Many games are keen to overburden players with abilities or techniques that, due to the large amount, they may never end up using. Dead Space's more utilitarian approach, on the other hand, contributes to the atmosphere instead of taking away from it. Of course, the narrative is important to get the best out of the game's ambiance, and it generally holds up its end of the bargain quite well. You can definitely tell there is something bigger at play here pretty early on, but the game strings you along and keeps you engaged for the bulk of it; the drip feed of further backstory helps to capture players further.

But then there's that quote. Yes, of course, for many looking to play Dead Space, they're likely looking forward to playing a scary game. Let's get this out of the way; Dead Space is hardly very scary. This can be attributed to 2 main factors; the first being that, beyond its initial premise, the game doesn't really have that many ways to scare the player. Sure, a seemingly dead necromorph jumping up to attack you might cause a player to jump the first time, but it's not something people are likely to fall for twice. It's too limited to strike fear in the audience beyond those first few times.

The second factor is that, even on harder difficulties, you realize that you are almost always the scariest thing on the ship. You can basically blast through enemies with ease, and seeing an alien drop down from a vent doesn't do much to instill fear because they just aren't that much of a threat. Horror games (and fear in general) relies on a sense of hopelessness, and for all the atmosphere Dead Space has, it doesn't stand a chance against your plasma cutter. As a result, pacing can drag a bit towards the middle of the game, because encounters that are supposed to be scary (and entertaining) enough to take the spotlight during narratively duller moments rarely are. In truth, the game rarely feels like a survival-horror game at all; it's more akin to a grittier, more realistic version of Halo.

Normally, when a game fails so strongly to deliver on its mission statement, it will usually be a disaster. Dead Space is unique in that regard. With its focused design, solid mechanics, and intriguing story, it's allowed to stand on its own as a great action third person shooter, with the promise of a deeper narrative on the horizon. Even if it's relatively easy to play Dead Space in the dark with headphones on, that doesn't take away from what it offers, and still leaves players with a lot of thrills-just not too many chills.

What a masterpiece - such a constant tense, horrifying atmosphere with great level and enemy design that keeps you scared all the way till the end. Especially the sound design is a 10/10, creating most of the atmosphere and horror out of the all the things in this game. What kinda keeps me away from giving this game a 10 is the amount of bugs which can be super frustrating to work around which really hurt the overall flow of the game as you get killed/cant proceed further without doing anything wrong - in those situations the game feels pretty unfair, tho the difficulty throughout the game is good. Another thing that bothered me was the camera being buggy/making it hard to see whats going on when in tight corners but that's really it but the game more than makes up for it with it's strengths like the satisfying combat or visual appearance. It really is one of, if not the best horror game out there and Im glad I played it.

Dead Space
• First time playing
• Dead Space is one of the few games from my lifetime of playing games seriously that has received a critical re-evaluation, though it certainly won’t be the last
• When Dead Space came out in 2008, most of everyone agreed that it was at best an above-average game
• It had some stand out moments but also some major drawbacks, so it kind of fell into the middle of the road
• The thing is by 2010, when I was getting into horror games and Dead Space would’ve been a cheap by, I was already playing some great, if not some of the best horror titles
• Silent Hill 1-3, the second Condemned game and The Penumbra trilogy. All of which set a high standard for quality, more or less
• The idea of playing Dead Space after hearing it underwhelming reception didn’t really make sense to me
• I wouldn’t gain interest in Dead Space as a franchise until its sequel, Dead Space 2 in 2011. The critics across the board said that most of the problems that the original Dead Space had was fixed in its sequel, so I decided to try out the demo
• I remember it being loud, in your face and full of action set pieces so I still wasn’t terribly interested
• After Dead Space 2 came out in 2013, most of everyone seemed to agree that it was terrible, being louder, more in your face and even more stuffed with action set pieces
• If that wasn’t bad enough, EA decided to turn it into a platform for micro-transactions. Horrific, though not it the way they intended
• After that, it seemed like Dead Space was just put to bed and the development team, Visceral games, was put on other projects
• Come 2017 though, EA pulled an EA and closed Visceral games mid project. Yet more talented and experienced people put out from work because EA wanted to liquidate assets for a quarterly profit
• But then, early in 2021, something interesting happened. A new, independent games development studio, named Striking Distance studios, started advertising their first game, The Callisto Protocol
• Striking Distance was founded by one of the creators of Dead Space and was made up of former Visceral games devs
• The Callisto Protocol was the dev returning to their horror roots, without the interference from a large publisher
• This was actually very intriguing. Former Dead Space devs making a new horror game with the benefit of hindsight and no EA looking over their shoulder. Seems like it would be everything we would ever want
• Me thought, I remained cautiously optimistic. I remembered not being terribly impressed with anything I saw or played of the original Dead Space games, so a new game from the same devs didn’t mean too much to me.
• Yet, it remained to be seen if The Callisto Protocol would become a new horror classic or just more above average passable
• Come the release date in December in 2022, it came out far worse than we could imagine

*Warning: spoilers*

Masterpiece of a game.

I really liked Dead space. Back in 2007, when it was first announced, I got hyped up immediately. The whole concept of the game, the horror, the atmosphere, it was something fresh and new. And my God, it looked so damn beautiful.

The story is really strong and whole spinoffs, movies and extra lore has been created from it. It is dark, creepy and full of plot twists. In the basics, you are Isaac Clarke who joins a rescue operation on the big colonization ship the USG Ishimura after they lost contact with it. After 15 minutes, the game changes from a rescue mission, to the deepest desire to be rescued. Along the way, you do everything in your power to survive and get the hell off of the USG Ishimura that the horrors, called Necromorphs, have taken over. They are all guided and mutated by a strange object called the Marker. You feel its presence everywhere and it drives you to insanity with hallucinations.

Back in 2008, Dead Space was the scariest game I ever played. And playing the first F.E.A.R. games, that is saying something. The perfect atmosphere and the constant feeling of dread and danger kept me on edge with every step. You never knew when some of those 4 armed abominations would jump out of the nearest vent.

Of all the Necromorphs, the first ones you encounter are the most disturbing. Their half-human appearance and their missing jaws send chills down my spine. The Necromorphs come in different variants and some are just human heads with tentacles, walking hands or a screaming guy, pinned to the wall with four murderous tentacles. When you get killed by an enemy, the small cut scene that follows is just brutal. You get sliced in half, the head with tentacles that I mentioned earlier will behead you and attach itself in your body, let you shambling around like a lifeless shell. It’s so violent and epic.

The gameplay mechanics are excellent. You find new weapons on your path to safety and can collect power nodes to upgrade them. You can also upgrade your health and statis (slow-motion attack thingy) with these nodes. You can find cash, laying around that you use to buy ammo and health packs in the store.
I also really like the idea that your health meter is on your back and that there is no visible GUI. Every counter or information is either on the weapon itself or on you. You can open a holo-screen with a map and objectives but you still see Isaac interact with it, rather than the game pausing and showing you an overlay.

Like mentioned, Dead Space looked, and still looks, amazing. The graphics are realistic with the ultimate dark and grim horror theme. The animations and walk cycle of Isaac, in which he carefully moves one step at the time is just perfect.

The music is just perfect, because there is no music. The only thing you hear are creepy sounds in the distance, a metal pipe that falls over without anyone present near it, creepy voices, rumbling in the vents around you and when one of those jaw-less, spawns of hell is creeping up behind you, you don’t hear a damn thing and get an instant heart attack.

Every step in Dead space can be deadly and you never know what it going to happen next. This mechanic is so incredibly well implemented that I got the actual feeling of fighting to stay alive, that today, I did not experience in any other game. I also cared a lot for the main character Isaac and felt a deep desire to do everything in my power to keep the poor soul safe and alive.

The ending gives lot of room for more story and more games, something that eventually happened in the future.

Dead Space defines my “modern history” of gaming, back when the PlayStation 3 was hot and new and it will always be one of my all time favorites.

Considering the Xbox and I don't really see eye to eye because of it's exclusive titles all boring the tits off of me, I can't deny that Dead space was kinda amazing.

Third person shooters are not my thing (unless you count the 2000 hours I've spent on splatoon) and if I'm being frank, Dead space appeared on my radar for the sole reason that it was on sale. Without thinking I just went meh and bought it. Despite the haphazard purchase I am quite aware of dead space and how it's been praised as an incredible 3rd person survival horror game and now that I've finally played it myself it's more a survival game because I don't recall one instance of being actually scared or startled by the titular necropmorphs. In the beginning sure it was a bit scary but after a while you kill so many of the bastards they become more of an annoyance than anything else. I'd like to give praise to the dismemberment mechanic where instead of just mindlessly firing away at an enemy, you can instead precisely dismember them for a faster kill. The general gameplay loop is quite satisfying as most weapons have a nice impact to them and stomping the shit out of a necromorph whos' legs you just blew of 3 seconds ago doesn't get old.

Most of the entire game is centered around restoring power to the entire ship (reminds of a lot of metroid fusion when I think about it) while slowly making your way through and being cautious lest you get caught off guard and violently dismembered. Story wise it's nothing spectacular. Simple premise of "Oh hey we found this alien artifact to holy fuck we are getting murdered by atrocities". Truth be told you don't have to pay to much attention to the plot at all considering how basic it is.

All in all very solid game with a great gameplay mechanic, satisfying feel with a nice tense atmosphere to go with it. As I stated before the game isn't really that scary as by the end you should have more than enough fire power to obliterate all but the strongest of necromorphs and the plot is so generic that I don't see the need to pay attention to it at all. Isacc is a G and I love the quick time animations where, if done succesfully, Isacc murders the shit outta the necromorph. Solid 8/10 game, Doesn't do anything innovative but what it does have it does right.

(side note: I haven't actually beaten the game but I am on the final chapter ready for the final boss. I'm waiting to receive my physical copy of the game so I can finish it. I doubt my review will change afterwards anyway)

An incredible horror game that defined the way you can do it. Close corridor and hallway plus the idea of the very limited supply of ammo, and without really a way to melee the enemies. The sound designed, the map done by hand and the specific horror moment that the game creates is awesome.

The enemies are also very different, and each one must be confronted differently.

Sadly the game aged somewhat poorly, so you may play it on the recent remake.

Definitely a game to be played if you like the gender!

Really good horror game I enjoyed. It's like a mix between The Thing, Evil Dead, and Event Horizon. One of the strongest things about this game that I admire is its atmosphere The game's sound design, lighting, and visual effects work add so much flavor to the setting. The way they incorporate whispers to make you wonder if there is something ahead or you're going crazy. And sometimes it's the constant banging metal noise making you wonder where a necromorph is at. The atmosphere makes want to move at slow pace rather than running around blindly, because an enemy could jump at you out of a vent space if you weren't paying attention. The set designs are where the Event Horizon style comes in, with all of it's eerie blood symbols and writing all over the walls, and the NPC's you encounter that ramble complete madness.

Onto gameplay, there's of course the unique way of killing an enemy. Complete total dismemberment to kill them. That's where Evil Dead comes in. The plasma cutter is a satisfying weapon to use. The sound design combined with cutting off the limb adds that "oomph" power to it, and it becomes so much better to use when upgraded. Then, there's the telekinesis mechanic, adding some layer to combat, by picking up items that far, picking up an explosive barrel and throwing it at a necromorph, or even using their limbs and throwing it at them to slice them. There's also the stasis module that allows you to slow something down which can be helpful as well. Some of the puzzles were decent but some that I find too simple where it's just, "put this part over here with your telekinesis to power the generator". The room where you had to place 4 batteries in a circle to activate the generator might be an example of what I mean as I thought it would be a little more than that.

A solid amount of weapon variety too, and like the plasma cutter, have their own quirks. The line cutter can throw a mine, force gun shoots a grenade, plasma cutter can switch horizontal or vertical depending on where the enemy is standing, and the pulse rifle does...whatever. I'll be honest, I find myself using those 4 weapons, even if the plasma cutter is what I mainly use. The force gun is good for crowd control, line cutter for multiple enemies, and pulse rifle to spray n' pray.

A good amount of enemy variety as well, each with different attacks and movement. There's the slashers which are your standard enemies, but man lurkers and swarmer's are the ones I find annoying because of how fast they can be. Most share the same weakness, which is complete dismemberment, however an exploder is great for killing multiple in a crowd. I also want to mention how much I love the creature designs of them and its absolute body horror. This is where The Thing style comes in, and I'm a huge sucker for body horror stuff.

The level design is decent, with some fair exploration in searching rooms, crates, or lockers for items you need. Then of course areas the have you use the telekinesis and stasis modules to move around with, which adds some depth to it. Though I cannot deny the tasks you have to do, I found kind of annoying because of all the inconveniences that keep coming up like "Issac we have a problem with X, head up to do Z". Sometimes backtracking to the tram felt a bit tedious depending on the level and how long it takes. Breadcrumb trails are quite the life saver though, I'll say.

There's nodes you find or buy that are used to upgrade or open rooms for more items. I spend most of my upgrades on the plasma cutter and HP anyways, but using them on doors can be rewarding when you find something like an item schematic. And of course there's the shop with the suit upgrades. Progression feels great with this as you pass through level to level with a new suit, it makes you feel powerful and rewarding.

Onto some of my biggest problems. The camera can really screw me over at times, primarily at an elevator, as it has to zoom closer on my shoulder, making my blindsides grow and aiming difficult. The movement feels sluggish, and having to maneuver past enemy attacks can be a pain in the ass. It's worse when you try to open a door and move in but the delayed movement makes Issac move left or right and then you get attacked. Not being able to quick turn really doesn't help here. Lastly having to fiddle through your inventory to use stasis feels pretty annoying. Why isn't there no quick stasis like healing?

And that's about it. Awesome game with some good combat and atmosphere, though movement controls could do much better.

I really enjoyed Dead space. I'm lukewarm when it comes to horror and third person shooter games, so this isn't anywhere near my favorite genre, but what Dead Space does with the genre, it does extremely well.

Dead space is a game of claustrophobia and resource-starvation. You are an engineer moving through a dead-in-the-water space faring vessel while you are set upon by reanimated dead creatures called Necromorphs. Though necromorphs come in all shapes and sizes, making for a diverse set of enemies to fight against, they are all vulnerable to dismemberment. Like other horror games, Dead Space keeps you close to running out of resources at all times in order to push you to play skillfully. If you unload on enemies without carefully aiming, you will run out of ammunition quickly. You must go for the limbs. There are a few different types of weapons to use, and each has specific advantages against specific enemy types, but there isn't any useless weapon in case you are left with only one type of ammo in your arsenal.

As you move through the ship, you get to use up to four guns from an arsenal of 10. You are also equipped with a kinetic device that allows you to move objects around as if they are weightless, and a stasis device that can slow movement for an object or enemy for a short time. There are also sections of the game in which you move through zero-G environments, or places in which you are in a vacuum and are limited by your own oxygen supply. These elements are expertly used in combination to continually vary the gameplay from moment to moment. There are some light puzzle mechanics that arise from the combination of these mechanics, as well as some tense combat that is heightened by their implementation in tandem with certain enemy types. On top of all of this, most of the game takes place in narrow hallways and the tension is elevated by the claustrophobia. In short, the game is extremely well designed.

I don't really have any specific gripes with the game, but I should point out that the story driving you through the derelict USG Ishimura is fairly standard stuff, and doesn't do much to excite the imagination much. You damage your own vessel while trying to land so you are stuck on the Ishimura until you can find a way off. Commence traveling about to different areas of the ship to get the tram up and running, the granitic generators online, eliminate the creatures that are contaminating hydroponics and life support, remove the debris from the cargo bay, get fuel for the shuttle, etc. The last bit of the story does shed light onto what ill fate befell the Ishimura and its crew, but it doesn't quite do enough for me, and the resolution isn't as solid as I was expecting. It feels like there is definitely more story to tell here, but at the same time there is no foreshadowing or glimpse of just WHAT might be coming next.

The game clocks in at around 10 hours. Pretty much the perfect length for this type of experience. All the mechanics are used enough times to feel like I got decent mileage out of them, but nothing overstayed its welcome. Additional difficulties are available for replays with a greater challenge, and beating the game once unlocks the hardest mode. The game is asking me to come back, and perhaps I will, but it doesn't feel necessary to jump back in immediately. All said though, it's quite the solid experience. I'd recommend it to anyone who can handle very violent games.

(Edit:) I came back to this review to add a bit more after a second playthrough on hard. I'd say not to play on hard until you have gone through the game once on normal. The reason is that gradually through the game you get items that allow you to upgrade your arsenal, and a slow trickle of money to buy more of these items. Because these upgrade items come in at a restricted rate, you can never get enough to upgrade everything. You must pick and choose. On hard, you should have an idea of what exactly you want to upgrade. Spreading your resources too thin will make it so you're unprepared to deal with the incline of the difficulty curve. Hard is a challenge worthy of its name, but it isn't that bad if you have a plan.

Really fun survival horror game. Would have loved more interconnected world design and maybe one more boss encounter, but overall worth it

Awesome game, even 15 years later. Very scary and the storyline is really captivating with an unbelivable end.
Only bad point, the maniablity is not really good, but this game has 15 years..

A horror game that is not scary but annoying. It just keeps spamming enemies at you, and you could outrun them no matter how "fast" or gigantic they are. I don't regret playing it had fun moments too. But it just gets too boring after like the sixth hour.

Amazing 7th Gen game, remake improved on it, but the original still holds its own with action and scares.

It would be a perfect game if you didn't have to mess with the settings to get it to run right.

For me to be over a decade late with playing this highly appraised title Dead Space doesn't show its age in the slightest. This playthrough was inspired by the upcoming release of the new remake so my plan was to have a simple playthrough to get an idea of the universe. After a nice short and simple story I can say my time was well spent . Solid story with decent voice acting performances helped keep me invested even when frustrated with occasional mobs of enemies overwhelming me. All in all Dead Space did a great job of introducing me to the Isaac Clarke while also getting me excited to see experience his future stories .

While it wears its Resident Evil 4 influence on its sleeve, Dead Space is an excellent continuation of its ideas with a more serious tone rather than feeling like a cheap wannabe.

The gameplay is an evolution of RE4 with the limbs mechanic being a creative separation, a good atmosphere is created, it doesn't nail the pacing as well as RE4 but its combat flows better in the right encounters. the progression is well-paced. feels a little too easy in the first 6 chapters for playing on hard mode. The amount of ammo provided was often perfect for the encounters, making me feel like I barely had enough supplies to get through, in the second half I frequently used the store to buy more ammo, which I never did in a RE game. A lot of mechanics come from theming, like zero gravity areas and limited oxygen areas. The limited oxygen areas felt underdeveloped and just sprinkled in to have them, There was never a reason to upgrade oxygen or even have more than one oxygen tank. The zero grav felt a little clunky, which they changed in the remake. The setting wasn't that compelling to me at first but the gameplay won me over eventually. The only good boss is ones that becomes mini-bosses later, it works because it is like a more dangerous version of a regular enemy. The other bosses don't work because they are basically walls with weak points that you shoot until they are dead. It's pretty impressive how many new ideas are juggled in this game while still being really good. The enemy design and variety lent itself to fun encounters where I had to think on my feet. The story was pretty good but definitely not the reason to play the game. Abstractly, the thing that holds this game back from being even better is that the whole is not greater than the sum of it's parts, it is merely the sum of its parts, which is still really good, but there is a disjointedness to the game that makes hard to enjoy as one great experience, rather than a bunch of smaller good experiances.
