The charm of the game is its graphics and comedy, other than that I was pretty disappointed.
The missions just start without giving you almost no dialogue or explanation specially in the beginning of the game and that kinda threw me off the story. Most of them ask you to collect something somewhere far away and come back and that started to get repetitive so I just stopped doing side quests. (I know there are missions in the bounty board Claptrap, pls stfu for gods sake)
This made me be at least 1 or 2 levels behind the main missions bosses but honestly that was for the better, it made them more challenging and fun. The last boss was boring tho.

I keep the medical equipment working - more or less.

Great game. The story wasn't a major thing but the game play is fun. Frustrating at times cause dying is no fun but at least it's not too easy! Winning an intense battle and almost dying multiple times and surviving by the skin of your teeth is rewarding. Swearing at mofo's and clearing areas is a good time. I found myself consulting google for hard/stuck parts. Grateful that's a thing these days. There were parts where I felt things were dry in terms of "whats the point" of this game but addicting game play kept me coming back. Not too shabby!

When you hear the phrase "genre-defining" applied to a piece of art, it's almost always used as an act of praise. By setting the standards for a medium of art and by influencing many that came after it, an album, painting, or game can attain an almost mythological reputation as the one that started it all. It can also sometimes set a dangerous precedent, though, as just being the first game to bring a unique element to the mainstream doesn't mean that element is implemented well or utilized to its best potential. (Which is why, for example, Super Mario 64 is very well remembered, and Jumping Flash! isn't.) For a picture-perfect example, let's take a look at Borderlands. Itself inspired by the action RPG series Diablo, Borderlands was one of the first games to take the dungeon-crawling-like experience out of the 3rd person RPG space and into the first-person shooter space and was certainly responsible for popularizing the looter shooter. It is, definitively, a genre-defining game. It's also not good. Like, really not good.

To be fair, it's a game that advertises itself as a co-op game as much as a single player. And as with many co-op titles, the right group can make any game fun, at least for a while. But when a game relies so heavily on being played in a group to be enjoyable, it's probably a sign the game isn't designed very well. For Borderlands, this can mostly be attributed to its story and mission structure. To call the narrative thin would be an understatement, and frankly, you get more personality out of the game's opening movie than you do out of its first few hours of gameplay. Characters are one-note, the humor is juvenile at best, and the whole game just feels kind of meaningless. The story and side missions you undertake are virtually unidentifiable from each other; so many of them are just ever-so-slight variations of fetch quests, or going to a place and shooting a guy. This is the kind of grindy, repetitive content that you see so often in MMORPGs, only this time, without the payoff. The boss battles aren't particularly satisfying or unique, so it just feels like the game is telling you to once again go to a place and shoot a guy, but this time, they'll have a lot of health.

It's even worse when what is supposed to be the game's shining moment—it's procedurally generated gunplay system—actively feels like it's trying to railroad the player. Sniping (or using any scoped weapon, for that matter) in this game feels awful for most of a typical playthrough, and when you're so often presented with weapons that are more than suitable just for hip firing, those simple strategies start to become much more appealing. It should be said that while each class isn't as differentiative as they could be, it's appreciable that they do allow for some unique playstyles, particularly in co-op. Even better is that Borderlands allows players to re-allocate their skill points at basically any time for a modest fee. This works very well with the game's RNG-based nature, allowing players to easily mix and match their skillset to whatever new weapon they wish to try out. It's a basically mandatory system, too, since the game is not shy about forcing players to participate in side missions in order to stand a chance against a regional boss.

One of the Borderlands' most distinctive aspects, though, is surely its use of cel-shaded graphics. It's a style that can be both pleasing on the eye while also saving the game some much-needed processing power on the graphical side. For the series debut, it fails at both of these. This game was released in 2009, which was the height of the grey-brown lifeless filter style for video games, and it does Borderlands no favors here. Save for the ending, every area is visually unengaging, every location a trash heap or an open, lifeless desert with a slightly different sepia tone. Typical of many 7th generation open world games, Borderlands has a big map with nothing to do in it. The only impact of that big map seems to be on the graphical side, which is prone to many frame drops, poor loading times, and incomplete textures. There are better-looking contemporaries with better performance than Borderlands, so it's hard to find justification for its poor performance.

The looter shooter genre has been one of the biggest supporters of the idea of games as a service—single games that are expected to perform as a consistent revenue source by means of updates and DLC. Opinion on the concept in the gaming community is often mixed, at best. And while Borderlands is a full game (albeit with 4 DLCs), it's clear even here why this idea rarely generates excitement. It's a 30-hour game with about 4 hours of ideas, and it feels like it relies solely on a chaotic multiplayer experience to enjoy. Borderlands' debut doesn't feel nearly fleshed out enough to justify it being the face of a genre, but when you look at the type of games its genre tends to release, it makes a little more sense.

Had a lot of fun with this game, classes are interesting and the talent trees give opportunities to have different builds. Story I felt was pretty run of the mill and wasn't really big on the humour, just me personally. Really loved the art style and found the world pretty decent to go through, overall great experience.

It's fine but the beginning half was so boring and also quite a bit unbalanced for single player. Although it did get better as it progressed, that was still so much of the game to get to the good part.

As much as I loved this game when it came out, it's actually not that good... It has many critical flaws that the industry has fixed and don't exist anymore. If you want to play Borderlands and wanted to start from the beginning, just don't, skip this and start from Borderlands 2, and if you have already played them all and this is the last one, just save yourself the time and play some other thing.

This game stands the test of time. Humorous dialogue, fun weapons, and great art make this game. If you are afraid it is too late to get into the series, do not worry about Borderlands feeling like an old game. It is a well made game that will still be enjoyable for years to come. If you like shooters, but prefer a single player or cooperative setting, you will like Borderlands. If you like the experience of random drops and doing quests, Borderlands has these features in abundance. Plenty of hours of fun and well worth the price tag nowadays.

Fantastic game that was very unique when it launched. This loot shooter makes you want to keep going to get the best loot you can. Combined with the funny and interesting characters, you’ll have a great time with this game. The sequels are definitely superior but fun can still be had. That being said, after playing this game co-op it’s hard to imagine wanting to play it solo. This game was designed for co-op

Best Looter Shooter I have played.

Borderlands is a fantastic game. It combines high paced action with good mechanics, a fun story, upbeat dub step music, humour, filthy jokes and does not take itself seriously.

The story is a little cliché in my opinion but works well for the concept of a looter shooter like Borderlands. Just hunt for a lost treasure which is exceedingly difficult to find.

Borderlands is a massive game with many, huge, open world maps. There are tons and tons of side quests you can complete for a nice new weapon, some cold hard cash, or a new skin (colour for your outfit actually). Each side quest is more ridiculous than the previous one and the use of every inch of the map makes this game worth every penny you spend on it.

The cell shading animations are nicely done, and this is the first game that I saw that used this unique technique. It gives a cartoon feeling, while still playing a fully rendered 3D game.

In the music department, Borderlands does also not disappoint. It got a lot of energetic dubstep fight tracks and nice calming ambient music in the background, while you pump a bunch of psycho midgets full of lead.

The progression feels rewarding and the game is well balanced. Enemies get stronger with you but are still beatable. If you stray to far from the main story line and enter certain areas beyond your level, enemies will wipe the floor with you, so you know what to avoid and come back to later.

The main concept of this game are the guns, finding legendary shields, weapons and relics for your character and develop yourself into a well-rounded killer. It is really fun to play with friends and makes for a good evening of fun. The different elemental weapons you can find is a good concept and makes you think, and plan which gun is best for what situation.

The use of enemies like midgets, psychos and Bruisers makes this game as ridiculous as it is hilarious. Midgets make high pitched screeches when you blow them away with your shotgun and psychos list all the things, they want to do to you when they mindlessly run toward you. Bruisers complain about their beautiful faces when they melt away by the acid in your special Maliwan rifle. It is just great fun. Also, Claptrap and his stupidity is genius and gave a few good laughs throughout the game.

I enjoyed every minute of the game, it is story and the collecting of loot, cash and special items. And then I played the DLC’s. My god, they were even better.
The DLC’s are all over the place and add a fresh new mini campaign in each one of them with a completely different idea and style.

Overall, this game and it’s DLC’s are in my top 10 favourite games of all time, and I would definitely recommend it to everyone.

Borderlands was the first looter-shooter game to really warp the genre and make it what it is today. In an age where game developers were constantly pushing for realism, Gearbox went with a different angle and made a zany, over-the-top, cel-shaded, apocalyptic gunfest that's kept me and millions of others entertained for years!

Graphically, I think Borderlands holds up incredibly well. Because it was made with a stylish and comic-like aesthetic, you can always come back to it and find yourself immediately sucked into Pandora without focusing on how laughable realism was for games made in 2009. Granted, graphics are far from the most important part of a game, but I think games that went out of their way to look unique and identifiable definitely hold their own more when compared to the games available today.

The gameplay is what really had me fired up. FPS games were never really my forte, but RPGs were, and I think Gearbox mashed them together beautifully, allowing a doo-doo tier COD noob like me to analyze all the different skills and statistics and still be able to clear the game's toughest challenges. I think games that have this kind of accessibility are really cool, because on the flip side, I'm sure there were gamers that were gods in shooters, but only picked gear based off its level, and also went nuts all over Blands.

There are definitely some issues with Borderlands, as with the first game in any series, but they're very minor, in my opinion. The most glaring of which is that the vehicle combat is trash; your car always feels like it has 2 hit points in comparison to the enemies, who have a regular health pool. This doesn't typically cause too much of a headache, as the cars are used for travel primarily, but there is a boss fight with an enemy in a car, and every time I fight him, I get out of mine and take him down on foot instead.

There's a lot to be said on Borderlands as a series, but as the debut of a brand new IP at the time, I think Borderlands knocked it out of the park! It's always my go-to example for modern games not having to strive for realism and grit to make an incredibly standout experience, and I'll always be keeping an eye on both the Borderlands series and anything Gearbox develops as a result.

+Elemental effects brings a lot of fun to the shooting mechanics
+Large set of changes in different weapons gives even guns of the same type different feel
+Unique characters give different playstyles to play through the game
-Severely bad pop in through the game
-Incoherent beats which switches between gritty and silly
-Environments blend together in theming and with the enemies
Overview: Borderlands is a game that does not what It wants to be and you can see how by how it tells it story compared to the design of certain characters and levels. This unfortunately comes out as incoherent and messy with certain enemies easily blending into the background. It is thankfully held up by a rather decent gameplay loop where element attacks can bring a lot of flair to the shooting and offering enough variety in it’s characters and weapons to keep the game from going stale as well as hold up enough to get past some of it’s shortcomings and was used to build onto it’s significantly better sequel.
